Prospect Watch: The El Paso offense was quiet Friday night, as the team was shut out for just the third time this season. … Despite the lack of offense, veteran Kevin Plawecki had his first three-hit night of the season. The backstop-turned-first baseman singled twice and doubled, raising his OPS above .700 for the season. The former big leaguer could be in line for more playing time if Brett Sullivan is summoned from the PCL, as Luis Campusano was scratched from the Padres’ lineup on Friday with a thumb injury. … Rehabbing righty Glenn Otto has struggled mightily in his return from a right teres major (shoulder) injury, but he looked sharp Friday despite taking the loss. Otto completed two innings and allowed a run on a hit, walking one and striking out three. Otto threw 25 pitches, 17 for strikes. While he only mixed in his knuckle curve three times, he got swings and misses on all three offerings. The 28-year-old has completed 6.2 innings in five games. If Otto can remain healthy and continue to stretch out, he will serve as a valuable depth option with big-league experience. … Sean Reynolds pitched well, eating three innings out of the ‘pen. He allowed a run on two hits, walking one and striking out one. The former Marlins prospect has high-octane stuff but has struggled to find the plate consistently since converting to the mound in 2021. The 6-foot-8 righty has walked 28 batters in 36 innings – a recipe for disaster in the PCL. Friday’s three solid innings lowered Reynolds’ ERA to 7.75 this season.

Amarillo Sod Poodles 10, Missions 2

Key Statistics: 2B Ripken Reyes, 1-for-4, 3B; 1B Robbie Tenerowicz, 1-for-4, R, HR (6), 2 RBI; CF Robert Perez Jr., 2-for-4, SB (5); LHP Robby Snelling (L, 1-7) 5.1 IP, 10 H, 9 ER, BB, K; LHP Ryan Och, 2.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 4 K

Prospect Watch: The battle with the Sod Poodles was delayed at the start thanks to a rain storm. While the skies eventually cleared, the Missions probably wished this one was washed away. The club allowed five homers, but they were blown out in the Texas Panhandle. … Friday’s outing was the worst of young Robby Snelling’s professional career. An unrelenting Soddies offense bludgeoned the 20-year-old lefty. Snelling allowed five homers – including three in the second inning – in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed a career-high nine earned runs before exiting. Snelling dominated last season in his pro debut, but he’s struggled in his second go-around in the Texas League. Over Snelling’s previous five starts, he’s pitched to a 9.29 ERA. While poor outings happen, Snelling’s lack of swing-and-miss stuff has been concerning. After posting a 26% K-rate in a brief stint with the Missions last year, he came into Friday’s start with a K-rate just under 20%, and then he punched out only one batter in 5.1 innings. The lefty has typically shown resilience throughout his career, but both his fastball and slider have taken a step back this season. Snelling has been lauded throughout his time in the system as a diligent worker and an example of leadership for teammates. … Ryan Och took over for Snelling and pitched the final 2.2 innings in his Texas League debut. The lefty allowed a run on three hits, striking out four. The 25-year-old out of Southern Mississippi missed all of 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. When healthy, he has produced remarkable strikeout totals as a professional. In 26.2 innings with the TinCaps, he averaged nearly 14 strikeouts per nine innings. While his 4.73 ERA in Fort Wayne wasn’t impressive, his FIP was just under three, indicating the lefty was a bit unlucky. With the way the Sod Poodles swung the bat Friday night, keeping them in the ballpark for 2.2 innings was quite the feat. … First baseman Robbie Tenerowicz homered Friday, as the free agent signing has found his stride. Tenerowicz’s homer was his sixth of the year. The former Mariner is hitting .321/.400/.500 in June.

Roster Moves: Och took the roster spot previously occupied by hard-throwing righty Cole Paplham, who was placed back on the injured list just 10 days after being activated for the first time this season.

TinCaps 5, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4

Key Statistics: CF Homer Bush Jr. 1-for-4, R, HR (2), RBI; DH Ethan Salas 2-for-3, 2B, BB; LF Joshua Mears 1-for-3, R, HR (3), 3 RBI; RHP Henry Baez 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), BB, 4 K; RHP Bradgley Rodriguez (W, 2-0) 2 IP, 3 H, R, 2 K

Prospect Watch: After allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, the TinCaps struck back dramatically. Joshua Mears slammed a pitch to dead center for a two-run, walk-off homer to win Fort Wayne. … For Mears, it was his third homer in the last four games. The 23-year-old outfielder has battled injuries and struggled to make consistent contact throughout his time in the system. However, when he does make contact, he has as much raw power as any player in professional baseball. During his four-game hitting streak, the Washington native has gone 6-for-14 with four strikeouts. After entering the series with an OPS of just .376 since coming off the IL at the end of May, Mears has pushed that mark up to .720 … Regarding hitting streaks; catcher Ethan Salas extended his to five games with a multi-hit effort. Salas singled, doubled, and drew a walk in four plate appearances. The 18-year-old top prospect is 8-for-18 during the five-game stretch, raising his average back above the Mendoza Line to .206. Homer Bush Jr. only had one hit but left Parkview Field for his second round-tripper of the season. The former Grand Canyon star has five extra-base hits this month after having just five in April and May combined. Bush Jr. hit .318 in May but has cooled off in June. With Friday’s homer, the 22-year-old is hitting .218/.348/.382 for the month. … Righty Henry Baez turned in a solid start but did not factor in the decision. Baez pitched five innings and allowed two runs (just one earned) on four hits. He walked one and struck out four. The 21-year-old has done solid work this month, pitching at least five innings in his three outings. He has a 1.72 ERA in June while holding opposing hitters to a .193 batting average. His fastball has been sitting at 95 mph, but he’ll need to generate more movement with it against more advanced hitters.

Visalia Rawhide 11, Storm 10 (14 innings)

Key Statistics: RF-P Wyatt Hoffman, 1-for-6; 2.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R (3 ER) (L, 0-1); CF Nick Vogt, 2-for-7, 2 R, HR (3), 3 RBI, SB (15); C Jacob Campbell, 3-for-7, 2 R, HR (4), 3 RBI; DH-1B Ethan Long, 2-for-6, 2 RBI; 1B-RF Ryan Wilson, 2-for-4, R, 2 BB, RBI; RHP Ian Koenig, 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, K; RHP Xavier Ruiz, 2.1 IP, H, BB, 3 K; RHP Thomas Balboni Jr., 3 IP, H, BB, 3 K

Prospect Watch: This one will likely go down as the weirdest game in the system all year. The Storm jumped out to a 4-0 lead, only to see Visalia score the next six runs and carry a 6-4 lead going into the ninth. After the Storm tied it in the ninth, they took leads in the 12th and 14th innings but could not keep the Rawhide at bay. In addition, because both teams ran out of available pitchers, Wyatt Hoffman made his fourth appearance on the mound. Having not worked more than an inning before, the 25-year-old utility man pitched the final 2.1 innings and took the loss after the Rawhide scored three in the bottom of the 14th in a game that took just over four hours to complete. The win went to Visalia infielder Cole Roberts. … Nick Vogt did his best to guide the Storm to victory with a clutch night at the plate. Vogt singled in the ninth to tie things and hit a two-run shot off Roberts in the 14th to give the Storm the lead. The 23-year-old has flashed more power at the plate as the season has progressed – a welcome sign for a squad that lost slugger Romeo Sanabria to a promotion to Fort Wayne. Vogt has three homers this month and is hitting .299/.333/.494 since a two-week stint on the IL. He also has a team-high 16 stolen bases in 18 attempts. … Catcher Jacob Campbell had three hits, including his fourth homer of the month. The former undrafted free agent from the University of Illinois has been on a tear this month, providing the Storm with power and defensive versatility. The 24-year-old has arguably been the hottest hitter in the system this month. Friday’s performance raised his June slash-line to .300/.352/.660 with four homers. He’s also produced impressive exit velocities off the bat. … Thomas Balboni Jr. pitched well, giving the Storm a season-high three shutout innings in relief. The 23-year-old out of Northeastern allowed just one hit, walking one and striking out three. Balboni has produced big strikeout numbers this season but has sometimes struggled to command the strike zone with a lively slider from a low three-quarters release. He’s looked much better in June, walking just three while striking out 15 in 8.1 June innings.

ACL Rangers 8, ACL Padres 1 (7 innings)

Key Statistics: CF Spence Coffman, 2-for-3; 2B Ismael Javier, 1-for-2, R, 2B; SS B.Y. Choi, 1-for-3, BB; RHP Abraham Parra (L, 0-2) 3.1 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB,2 K; LHP Adler Cecil, 2 IP, H, ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres struggled again Friday, losing to the ACL Rangers on a 107-degree day in Peoria. The loss dropped the ACL bunch to 16-20. … Spence Coffman started in center fielder and had a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The Mississippi native has played well in his third season in the desert. With his sixth multi-hit game in the streak, the 20-year-old has raised his batting average to .336, just outside the top 10 in the league. He’s added 11 steals as well. … Second baseman Ismael Javier doubled – the only extra-base hit of the day for the Padres. The 18-year-old switch-hitting infielder has a .612 OPS in 30 games in his stateside debut. … After a rough start from Abraham Parra, lefty Adler Cecil pitched two innings. The Temecula native allowed one run on one hit, walking three and striking out three. The 6-foot-4 lefty was the Padres’ 19th-round pick out of Temecula Valley High School last season. He’s struck out an impressive 24 batters in 14.1 innings, but 25 walks have led to an unsightly 9.42 ERA.
