I’m so excited about the adorable fall welcome door decorations my colleague Amyah Hill created for our residential students! (And also, I still geek out every time I get a reminder we are literally working just 4 blocks from The White House)

Colleagues who are K-12 licensed educators currently teaching in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, or Utah; please consider spending approximately 10 minutes helping my colleague Jennifer Hermanson M.S. Ed collect data for her doctoral study.

Huge shout of thanks to Jonathan Irias-Puerto for sharing his knowledge on psychological safety in the workplace with the CLRE team. The workshop was rooted in theory, focused on the audience, and engaging. Much appreciated!

I greatly enjoyed having the management team to my home this afternoon for the first in a three-part summer team development session around the five voices of leadership. Huge thanks to Kyle Johnson for leading us in an introductory exercise, Mallory McPherson-Wehan, MPH for inspiring a delicious and nutritious menu, and to the whole team for active engagement and discussion. The week started with my bestie’s five-year-old-twins' dance recital. I’m going to infuse some of that inquisitive creative energy into each day this week. (Though unlike these rising kindergarteners, I will be taking naps).

Ten years ago this month I left a job I loved as a Dean of Students in Beijing and boarded a one-way flight to South Africa. My original plan was to backpack my way as far up the east coast of the continent as I could before I ran out of savings, and then fly home and get a job somewhere. As it turns out, two years worth of unforeseen temp jobs opened up, so after some time in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and what was then called Swaziland, I packed up and headed to Greece and Great Britain for one semester each to do startup work as a Site Director for Northeastern University (where I also later went on to get my doctorate), and circumnavigated the globe with 600 students on Semester At Sea / ISE. After two years living out of suitcases, I then got the remarkable opportunity to contribute to an unimaginably well resourced start up university in Saudi Arabia for five years. And in between all this I got to visit my 100th+ country. You do not need to live your life by rungs of a career ladder or by what everyone around you is doing. Go get lost.

40 years ago today my mom woke up with a headache, dropped me and my sister off at daycare, went to work, and collapsed. Stroke. Brain aneurysm. She was 28 years old. She proved the doctor's predictions wrong by living, then by walking, and then by talking. As I entered kindergarten, she and I learned to read and write together. Today she is the longest surviving stroke victim from that hospital. Though she sustained brain damage and is completely paralyzed on her right side, she doesn't let anything hold her back. My mom lives life with more fierceness and curiosity than anyone I know. She celebrates the anniversary of her stroke like a birthday, because it gave her a chance to be alive again. Happy 40th “birthday", mom.(Photo from a previous visit home)

It was a real treat for Kyle Johnson and I to welcome the CAACURH Regional Board of Directors to The George Washington University for their summer meeting. I was impressed to learn several members of the board took a morning stroll to the Washington and Jefferson monuments, getting in just shy of 10,000 steps before 10am!Thank you Quest Morris-Jacobs for all of your work in bringing this esteemed group of leaders to our campus this summer!#CAACURH #MonumentalLeadership
