'Nothing personal,' says Walmart shopper with firm reply at receipt check (2024)

A WALMART shopper has given a heartwarming sentiment to employees after admitting he would never show his receipt to them.

Many customers continue to refuse to show their receipts to retail employees as they exit for many reasons.

Many believe the receipt is their property, while others think the retailer should trust them to check out properly if they are being forced to check out on their own.

One shopper explained that he would "never" stop to show his receipt, but he still wanted to apologize for his actions.

"I want to take this time to apologize to all Walmart receipt checkers. I have never stopped to give you my receipt & I will never stop to give you my receipt," a customer posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Of course, I will continue to say hello, goodbye & no thank you like a respectable adult. It's nothing personal."

He paired the tweet with a picture of a smiling receipt-checking employee wearing a Walmart vest.

'NO THANKS'

Shoppers continue to fume about the anti-theft method and post their infuriating stories of being stopped by employees on social media.

One shopper slammed the policy and argued that it held up customers from leaving the store.

"So the Walmart near me hires a security guard from a security company to check receipts every night after 8," a customer posted to Facebook.

The customer then detailed an interaction they had the night before with the security guard.

"Anyways, last night I checked out at self-checkout, balled up my receipt as tiny as I could make it, then proceeded to walk by him and a customer he had 'detained,'" they said.

"He says 'sir, I need to see your receipt' I say 'here you go', drop the pea-sized receipt in his hand, and walk out."

They also claimed the guard follows them out to their car when they leave the store.

Camron Dowlatshahi, a Los Angeles attorney, spoke to The U.S. Sun about receipt checks and customer's rights and options when it came to being asked to show your receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate around the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it is within the store, it is completely legal. “There’s seemingly nothing illegal about that. You’re still on the company’s premises and their reason to do it is to prevent thefts,” Dowlatshahi confirms.
  2. However, if they are chasing you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. "Location matters," he explained. "If you’re outside of the store you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of theft and that you have to show your receipt, I think that's a bit of a different situation because now you're on your way."
  3. While customers are allowed to say no to receipt checks, it may cause issues if you do and the store suspects you of stealing. "You can say no, maybe it creates an unnecessary hassle for yourself because now you may have the police come to your house and follow up," said Dowlatshahi.
  4. If you are being barred from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you could have a legal case — but the store must have held you for a long time. “Let's say it’s for hours, that's certainly false imprisonment, and they didn't have any impetus for doing so," Dowlatshahi explained. "If a customer has been emotionally traumatized by being held for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] to sue.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt," he concluded. "It’s just a really simple thing to do. If you didn’t steal anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

"Oh [by the way] he follows me every time I do it. He walks out to the front of the store to see what vehicle I get in," they explained.

"Why? No clue."

Another shopper lamented about how receipt checks have changed their relationship with Walmart employees.

"It used to be the greeter would just say, 'Hi welcome to Walmart,'" the customer wrote.

"Now, they serve a dual purpose as they randomly check people's receipts as they leave."

The annoyed customer said the greeting now means nothing because they know the worker's true intentions.

They also admitted to refusing receipt checks and instead saying "Have a good one" while leaving the store.
