Famous New York City’s yellow cabs used to be red and green!

New York City’s famous yellow cabs used to be red and green before a law was introduced in the 1960s decreeing that all taxis should be the same color. Yellow was chosen because it’s the most noticeable color from a distance. Today, more than 13,000 yellow cabs are driving around NYC, with each taxi making an average of 800 trips per month.

Located at the mouth of the Hudson River, spectacular New York City comprises five boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. As the most populous and international city in the US, it’s renowned for its famous skyscraper skyline. New York has more skyscrapers than any other city — and they are one of the reasons for one of the worst traffic jams in the world!

Low ownership of vehicles

There are 3.1 million households in New York City, but according to a recent census, only 1.4 million (45%) of households own a car. Relatively low ownership of personal vehicles is a reflection of the volume of traffic on the roads in the city and the fact it takes longer to travel from A to B in your car than it does to jump on efficient public transport.

Great public transport

The subway, ferries, buses, and commuter trains all run regularly and are relatively inexpensive. With 25 routes covering more than 665 miles (1070 km), 1.7 billion people ride on the New York City subway system each year. Based on annual ridership, it's the busiest rapid transit system in the Western world.

Automotive manufacturing

Between the turn of the century and the late 1930s more than 50 makes of cars were manufactured in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island City, and Queens. Although NYC was never considered a hotbed of car manufacturing, as a city it was responsible for popularizing car ownership through its glitzy showrooms on Broadway, designed by famous architects, such as Frank Lloyd Wright. At the time, car ownership was only possible for the rich upper crust, and given the wealth of New Yorkers, it’s easy to understand why a third of all cars owned in the US in 1900 were owned by New Yorkers.

Scarcity of space and the exorbitant cost of real estate drove car manufacturers out of NYC a long time ago. Today, 4.4 million vehicles travel through the USA's capital city daily, and 717,000 travel through Manhattan's CBD.

New York Transit Museum

Located in a historic subway station in Brooklyn, the New York Transit Museum displays historical artifacts of the NYC subway, bus, and commuter rail systems. It’s the premier museum of New York City's transit history. A visit will teach you how the city’s transport systems were constructed, about the typography of the stations, and the differences between vintage subway cars and today’s models. For more information visit the official website for the New York Transit Museum.

New York International Auto Show

Held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in March or April each year, the New York International Auto Show is a 10-day automotive extravaganza that not only showcases new vehicle models, but also houses automobile-related conferences, forums, symposiums, and other gatherings. Established in 1900, it was the first Automotive exhibition to be held in North America. These days, it’s attended by 34 automakers and over a million visitors. For more information on the New York International Auto Show visit their website.

Smart choice

All-season tires can be a smart (and actually, the most popular) choice for driving in New York all year round. These tires are specially designed for versatile, but quite mild weather conditions, and they withstand rains, light snow, and warm temperatures. But for better performance in the colder months, we advise purchasing all-season M+S (mud and snow) tires that provide a strong grip on the icy road, great aquaplaning, and driving in the snow. Here at Utires.com, you can save up to 50% by buying used all-season tires with plenty of tread left.

Cold-season

Locals consider April to June and September to November to be the best months to visit New York City. If you don’t mind wrapping up warm and like the idea of experiencing the city at its most festive, then consider a winter visit, either just before or after Christmas. You may even get lucky and experience the Big Apple with snow on the ground! And to secure yourself a pleasant trip, choose your New York tires wisely.

Usually, the cold season in NY lasts from mid-October to early April, with an average daily high temperature below 48 °F. When it drops below 45 °F, you may want to change your all-season tires for winter ones, which will give you a superior grip on snow and ice. The coldest month of the year in NYC is January, with an average low of 29 °F and a high of 40 °F. Unite Tires has many options of new or used winter tires: enjoy our competitive prices and a free FedEx shipping right to your New York doorstep!

Warm-season

The warm season in New York are the pleasant months from early June to mid-September. The best choice for warm weather are all-season, summer, or performance tires. Shop them online on our website and save up to 50%. Our smart pricing policy allows you to significantly decrease your tire budget: you can choose high-quality used tires and get yourself both a summer and an all-season tires sets, instead of having to decide on just one set!

Use our smart search console and get the tires, matching your driving style, vehicle type, terrain, car manufacturer, etc. Get tires for your SUV, or even trailer!

Seasonal tire changeover

All-season car tires

All-season car tires are the most popular option for New York drivers: they allow for reasonably safe driving all year round. United Tires offer you both new and used all-season tires for very competitive prices: our smart pricing policy allows you to save up to 50% on tire purchase. If you own a set of high-quality all-season tires, you do not necessarily need to perform a seasonal tire changeover. But if you’re aiming for the enhanced performance, or own a sports car or a specialty vehicle, it makes sense to get two sets of tires instead of just one.

Dial our local number at 773-840-0282 or call toll-free at 1-888-566-6214 if you have any questions or need assistance with your purchase. Our customer support staff are available to answer your questions 24/7.

Summer tires

April is when the weather starts getting warmer and drivers, aiming for the enhanced performance, need to start thinking about switching over to their summer tires. They are perfect for hot and muggy New York summer! Here at United Tires, we have many great options — both new and used — that match all tastes and budgets. And remember: the safe temperature range for this type of tire is above 45 °F. The rubber compound is hard and would stiffen on the cold road’s surface, making driving unsafe.

Winter tires

Anytime from October onwards, the city is likely to receive a dump of powdery snow. For this reason, each year, from mid-October onwards, it’s permitted for New Yorkers to change over to winter tires. Winter tires keep your wheels closer to the road and allow more space for the snow and slush to escape. Choose your new or used winter tires on our website, submit your order before 12 p.m., and get your fresh set shipped to you on the same business day! Another safe (and recommended by the law) option for the winter months is all-season Mud and Snow tires. If you found an M+S abbreviation on your tire’s sidewall, you’ll be just fine even in the harshest of the snowstorms!

Studded tires

Ever questioned the need for studded tires in New York City? You’re not alone. Harsh NYC winters make them an excellent tire option through the coldest months of the year. Studded tires have metal studs inserted into the tread to increase grip on ice and snow. With only restricted use of studded tires in New York City allowed, it’s important to make sure you don’t change over your tires for studs until October 16 and then change them back again to all-season tires by April 30. At Utires.com, we have a wide range of studded tires for NYC winters, that can be ordered online and shipped the same day, using FedEx’s free door-to-door delivery service.

Unspoken Road Rules

Tires for Sale in New York City: Buy Online at Utires.com (19)

Driving in New York City is not for the faint-hearted! To begin with, it will feel stressful and chaotic, particularly during morning and evening rush hour. If you’re simply visiting the city for a short break or vacation, it’s advisable to take reliable public transport or walk between locations, rather than tackling congested roads in a car. For New Yorkers or anybody living in the city long term, driving can’t always be unavoidable and in which case, it’s important to be aware of the following unspoken road rules:

  • Drive with confidence but also drive slowly to avoid making mistakes. The is 30 miles per hour (about 48 km)
  • Pedestrians and bikes are everywhere in NYC so look out for them at all times
  • When parked on the street, always turn in your side mirrors to keep them safe from damage
  • Lock your car and leave nothing on display for opportune thieves to steal
  • Studded tires in New York City are only legal between 16 October and April 30 each year.

Parking rules

6 things you need to know about New York City parking rules

Parking in New York City is notoriously difficult - not only to find a free spot but also to avoid violating parking restrictions when the entire city is a designated tow-away zone. Here are some tips to help you jag the perfect spot and avoid any unnecessary, costly fines.

  1. Beware of fire hydrants: Don’t park within 15 feet on either side of a fire hydrant and don’t rely on road markings to guide you as they can be inaccurate.
  2. Read all signs: When parking, diligently read all the signs in the area, even those that appear to be temporary.
  3. Up-to-date vehicle registration: Make sure your vehicle registration is up to date, otherwise you could easily be fined by a passing police officer.
  4. Alternate side parking rules: Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations are put in place to facilitate street cleaning. They are posted on signs with a "P" crossed by a broom and indicate the days and times parking isn't allowed. If ASP is in effect, you aren’t allowed to park on the side of the street that’s being cleaned.
  5. Paying for parking: The easiest way to pay for street parking throughout the city is on the ParkNYC app, website, or hotline.
  6. Holiday parking: On major holidays you’re able to park in many areas free of charge. On some religious holidays, alternate side parking is also suspended.

New York City tolls: paying for a convenient ride

New York has over 30 road and bridge tolls which can make driving both complicated and expensive. Most of New York's toll roads, tunnels, and bridges are now cashless meaning you have to either purchase an E-ZPass® in advance of travel or pay afterward using Toll By Mail - note that the latter option is much more expensive. The cost of New York tolls using an E-ZPass® varies between $2.50 and $6.50. Not all New York tolls are both ways. For example, if you travel through Holland Tunnel or Lincoln Tunnel, you only pay a toll when entering Manhattan but not when leaving.

  • Bronx Whitestone Bridge connects Throggs Neck and Ferry Point Park in the Bronx with the Whitestone neighborhood of Queens on the southern shore. Its E-ZPass® toll rate is $6.55.
  • Queens Midtown Tunnel was opened in 1940 to relieve traffic congestion on the city's East River bridges. It connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens and costs $6.55 to cross with an E-ZPass®.
  • Henry Hudson Bridge connects north Manhattan to the Bronx and was built in 1935 as part of the Henry Hudson Parkway. It costs $3 in toll fees to cross it using an E-ZPass®.
  • Kennedy Bridge (formerly Triborough Bridge) is actually a series of 3 bridges that connect the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, and The Bronx. Using an E-ZPass® it costs $6.55 to cross.
  • Throgs Neck Bridge is a New York suspension bridge that carries 6 lanes of interstate traffic over the East River. The bridge connects The Bronx and Queens. The toll rate to cross it is $6.55.

U.S. Routes, starting in New York City

Several U.S. routes start in the heart of New York City. Interstate 78 crosses the Hudson River from New Jersey via the Holland Tunnel and finishes in Lower Manhattan at the tunnel plaza. The I-87 runs from The Bronx to the Canada-US border where it connects with Quebec Autoroute 15. Interstate 95 extends from the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River to the Connecticut state line at Port Chester. It passes through New York City.

We always say that the best tires are safe tires! Over the course of the year, the temperature in NYC varies from 28 °F to 85 °F and is rarely below 614°F or above 92 °F. The choice is yours: to drive on all-season car tires or to change between summer and winter rubber! On our site, you can find all the information you need about tire types and make a sensible choice.

Each of the used tires featured at the United Tires online store has undergone a thorough 3-stage inspection: automatic and manual after being received from the supplier, and a thorough manual before being shipped to the customer. All our used tires have at least 4/32” of tread left and are safe to drive. Another attractive option is to buy tires driven once (basically just tried on once). And if you’re looking for just one or a set of new tires, enjoy our sign-up discount and free FedEx shipping right to your NYC doorstep!

Buy tires in New York and save up to 50%!

With warm summers and harsh winters to deal with, New York drivers are advised to use two sets of tires throughout the year. A set of summer tires or all-season tires for spring, summer, and fall and a set of winter tires or studdable tires for the winter months, between October and April. But good quality tires are costly and it's worth shopping around to find the best deal you can.

United Tires’ discounts allow car owners to save a considerable amount on tire purchases. Search for tires online at utires.com. Consider a summer set of 4 used 285/40R21 Continental ContiSportContact for less than $200, plus a winter set of 4 used Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi2, which also sold less than for $200. To buy new tires of this standard normally costs around $1500! Add a free FedEx delivery right to your New York doorstep and enjoy all of the online shopping benefits!
