D10 THE ALBUQUERQUE TRIBUNE Friday, November 6, 1998 Zacaria Rael was military role model By Jason Gibbs TRIBUNE REPORTER Zacaria F. Rael of Albuquerque, one of the first Hispanics to reach the rank of full colonel in the U.S. Army, served as a role model to countless young men. "He was a hero first of all, a soldier, and a highly respected person. But for me he was a tender and loving father.
He knew how to live," said his daughter, Catherine Rael. Rael died Oct. 28 at his residence in Manorcare in Albuquerque of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 82. He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on Oct.
10, 1916. He attended Normal High School and Highlands University in Las Vegas. He graduated from the University of Omaha in 1961. In high school he met his future wife, Agnes Padilla. They married in 1943 and raised their family together until her death in 1986.
Rael was an outstanding athlete who competed in football, basketball, tennis and boxing. His daughter Catherine remembers stories of her father keeping his boxing gloves in a boxcar where he would teach and practice boxing. When arguments arose among his friends, he would take them to the boxcar to settle their differences "like men," according to Catherine. In 1940, he was called to active duty in the National Guard, beginning an illustrious military career. Rael fought throughout World War II and the Korean War.
He participated in some of the most decisive campaigns of this period including Huertgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, and the landing at Inchon during the Korean War. He was a highly decorated member of the military whose medals included the Silver and Bronze Stars. Rael was admired by his superiors, and the men in his command were fiercely loyal to him. After his retirement, it was not unusual for him to encounter these men, soldiers who remembered lives he had saved, favors he had done. Retired Maj.
Gen. Frank A. Camm, one of his former subordinates who has since risen through the ranks, was unable to attend Rael's retirement in 1973, but wrote of his former commander, "I shall never forget the fierce determination with which you constituted your company as infantry and dug in to fight to the death if necessary to halt the enemy as they were moving around our right flank during the Bulge. "I believe I learned more from you than anyone else I know about soldiering and the art of commanding troops in combat." Catherine remembers him as a military hero and as a father. "My dad had two distinct sides.
One was this military side, where he excelled. He was incredibly ambitious and had incredibly high integrity. On the other side, he was a great family man, tender, a warm person. His family was very, very important to him. "When he was dying- the night before he died he was going into a coma, and my sister and I felt so bad.
We started telling Zac stories to make ourselves feel better. He smiled and his eyebrows went up and down. We knew he heard us and was glad we would remember him by his stories." Col. Zacaria F. Rael has been interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
The family welcomes memorial contributions to the American Veterans Association.
