Position OverviewThe Primary Nurse works under the general direction of the Hospice Clinical Supervisor, the attending physician and the Hospice Medical Director, in the provision of skilled nursing assessment, planning and care in order to maximize the comfort and health of Hospice patients and families.
EducationGraduate from an accredited NLN school of nursing required.
LicenseCurrent license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Mississippi.
CertificationMust complete BCLS certification by the end of position orientation; must maintain current BCLS certification.
ExperienceA minimum of two (2) years’ experience as an RN within the past five (5) years required. One (1) year experience in an acute care hospital, hospice, or home health setting preferred.
Physical DemandsStands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses many physical motions in performing day to day activities. Work involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease. Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard. Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue.
Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate, speak, and enunciate to express/exchange ideas and detailed information in person and on the telephone. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity, with or without correction, with the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms that are closer to compare data at close vision.
Mental DemandsMust possess keen mental faculties in the management of information. Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels associated with care of acute patient/family, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of patients and families, and demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.
Work requires superb communication / speaking / enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.
Special DemandsMust possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Must possess the ability to work independently with little supervision and seek guidance as needed to clarify assignments or request for more information. Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.). Must have intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Must have a valid driver license and satisfactory driving record as job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area – with the employee providing his/her own transportation. Frequent travel within a radius of 50 miles, with occasional travel beyond, is required. Must have liability insurance of personal vehicle used in Hospice activity. Must report any accidents that occur during working hours.
Must be available to take call in a call rotation including weekend.
Must have a working knowledge of hospice regulations so that each patient is being cared for appropriately.
