Picking the right greyhound as a winning dog primarily entails understanding a combination of deciding factors such as the dog's pedigree, physical health, performance track record, temperament, and intangible qualities that make it stand out as a potential champion.

Win and Place Markets

Betting on a dog to win is the simplest type of bet. However, you can also bet on a dog's place, which typically means finishing in either first or second position. The odds for a place bet are usually lower than for a win bet, but the chances of winning are higher.

Distance plays a key factor when categorising different greyhound races. For each track the official lengths may differ but they can usually be split up into Sprints, Middle, Stayers and Marathon. These are categorised on the racecard by letters – D for Sprint, A for Middle, S for Stayers and E for Marathon.

In the context of greyhound betting, SP stands for “Starting Price.” This term denotes the final odds available on a greyhound at the time the race begins.

Although favorites win about 30% of the time at most tracks, that doesn't mean that the one you bet on will come in.

How to pick winning dogs at the track? ›

The dog with the fastest average times is an ideal candidate for winning a race, especially if it has a box position that suits its running style. The dog with the best record in its last three starts in the same grade or a higher grade. Remember, the latest few races can be very important.
