The first time I heard about sweet tea is when my sister moved to Tennessee. She called me and told me, “And here, you just ask for tea at a restaurant and it’s ALREADY SWEETENED!”
Having lived in California all our lives, this was an entirely new concept for us. I’m not sure if we were just oblivious to it, but none of the restaurants we ate at in California had sweet tea. But Tennessee? My sister wasn’t lying.Almost every single restaurant served sweet tea and if you didn’t want it sweet, you better clarify that you want UNSWEET tea because if you say “tea”, you’re getting it sweet.
Nowadays, living in Las Vegas, there issweet tea options at some restaurants. Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and McDonald’s serves it and most of the BBQ places have their own sweet tea too. Other restaurants herehave fruity teas that are lightly sweetened, and while I like those, those are definitelynot what I would consider “sweet tea”.
Many years later, after being introduced to sweet tea, David and I visited Charleston, South Carolina. It was 2013 and weencountered another tea first for us:boozy sweet teas — straight from the bottle. We attend an event at the Charleston Tea Plantation(owned by the Bigelow Tea family) and we were introduced to Sweet Tea Vodka — to be exact, it was FireflyOriginal Sweet Tea Vodka. Both the Firefly Distillery and the Charleston Tea Plantation are located onWadmalaw Island, SC, withFirefly beingmade with the tea that comes right from that plantation.
It was at the plantation that we were served amazing Arnold Palmer co*cktails made withFireflyOriginal Sweet Tea Vodka.
FireflyOriginal Sweet Tea Vodka is awesome but isn’t always easyto obtain in Las Vegas. Luckily, there is a bunch of other Sweet Tea Vodkas available today. Your grocery or liquor store should have a few varieties for you. For this Frozen Sweet Tea Vodka Pops recipe, Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea was used. If you can’t find a sweet tea vodka, you can also use regular vodka, if you wish.
Making theseFrozen Sweet Tea Vodka Popsis VERY easy. Simply mix together your favorite sweet tea (either store-bought or homemade) and the sweet tea vodka. If you wish, add1 tablespoon or so of lemon juice.Pour yoursweet tea vodka mixture into the frozen popsicle molds, add your sticks, and freeze overnight. That’s it.
Here is the full recipe. If you aren’t ready to make these yet, be sure to save them to one of your Pinterest boards so you can find it easily next time.
