Connecting my Deco X20 together with the Deco X50-Outdoor

Thursday

Model: Deco X20

Hardware Version:

Firmware Version:

Hello,

I would lik to check on the best way to set up a Deco X20 and Deco X50-Outdoor.

I am operating 5villa units that is side by side (Something like a terrace house). I have my wifi modem in the last unit. I have actually bought a number of deco x20 to supply internet to the other 4 units. Can I check what is the best way to do that other that signing up for more lines?

My current set up is this, the modem is located on level 2 of the house, as for the other 4 units, the deco x20 is set up on alternate level. However, I noticed that instead of connecting to the nearest node, it is always trying to connect to the main deco which causes the signal to be weak.

I have just bought a deco X50 outdoor and was thinking if I were to place a deco X50-outdoor in the middle of the 5 units outdoor to this mesh system, will it improve the signal strength?

I'm not too familiar with AP mode or what not as I am very green in this area of focus.

With Deco mesh, Satellite Deco prefers connection to Main Deco, even if signal is weak. Newer Deco models with updated firmware have an option to configure how Satellite Deco connect, but not all of them.

If you can make screenshot of Update Deco page in your Deco app and share it here, it'll helpme figure if your Decos have or can have that feature. I'll put an example of that page at the bottom of this post.

Generally speaking, the best solution (if feasible) would be to lay Ethernet cable(s) and connect all Deco with Ethernet cables in daisy chain more, such as:

When you are saying "signing up for more lines," what do you mean? If you explain, that may help me to figure if other solutions are available for you.

@Alexandre.

Hello Alexandre,

Thank you for sharing.

What I meant by having more lines, I meant that signing up for more internet connection with the internet provider. Afterall, this is a 5 villa units, it should have at least 1 internet connection per unit. But because of the high cost involved, I am actually trying to avoid that and use a mesh system instead.

I understand that the speed will reduce as long as the signal is weak or is far away from the modem. Can i check and understand that with more deco units, does it improves the speed? If no, then wouldnt this mesh acts more like a repeater? (Apologies, I am not familiar with this)

I have recently just bought a X50 outdoor deco (waiting for it to be delivered). I hope that with a X50 outdoor deco, it will improve the coverage and signal strength.

What I hope to achieve:

Modem -- Main Deco --> Deco 1 --> Deco 2 --> Deco 3

With a X50 Outdoor, I am hoping for it:

Modem -- Main Deco --> X50 outdoor -- All decos to be connected to X50 outdoor.

I would recommend updating firmware through Deco app.

According to TP-Link documentation, firmware 1.1.8support Connection Preference feature, which allows to configure how Satellite Deco connect to each other. It is documented here:How to select a preferred signal source on the Deco App

See if you have that feature in Deco app after you updated firmware.

This feature is only available when all Deco units in Deco mesh support it. Until you add Deco X50-Outdoor to your Deco mesh it would not be possible to tell if your X50-Outdoordoes support it. Most likely it will.

If it does, after addingDeco X50-Outdoor to your Deco mesh you can still have that feature in Deco app and can use it to connect Deco units the way you want:

Modem -- Main Deco --> X50 outdoor -- All decos to be connected to X50 outdoor.

-------------

Also, checkthis FAQ for more detailed discussion of Connection Preference feature:Connection Preference: Customize Your Preferred Signal Source

FAQs

Can you mix Deco X20 and X60? ›

All our Deco models can be mixed to work together.

Can I connect Deco to another Deco? ›

Now that the main Deco device has been configured, you can link a second Deco device to connect in a cascade arrangement and create your mesh network. Plugin the power supply adapter to the Deco and plug it into an electrical power point to power up the second Deco.

Can you use different Deco models? ›

In theory, you can add as many Deco units (could be different Deco models) to your existing Deco mesh network.

How do I connect my second Deco to my main Deco? ›

If the second Deco that is going to join the Deco network is the same model as the main Deco, (e.g., X50 and X50), simply plug in the new Deco and it will be automatically added to the Deco network within 2 minutes.

Can you have too many deco mesh? ›

In Theory, there is no limit to how many Decos can be in a single network. For networks using WiFi 5 (AC) Decos, we do recommend limiting the number of Deco units to 6. This will ensure the best possible performance for your network.

Can I connect different types of Deco? ›

You can mix different Deco units in your network - just go through this FAQ for details to consider.

Can I have two main decos? ›

Yes, just configure and add different Deco models within the same Deco network. Afterward, you can connect them via Ethernet cable(s) to set up the Ethernet Backhaul connection.

Can you have two Deco networks? ›

In the Deco app, you can create different Deco networks with your TP-Link ID and manage them conveniently from the Deco app with one account. You can also help family or friends manage their networks with your Deco app.

How many devices can Deco X20 handle? ›

With 802.11ax Wi-Fi, the Deco X20 system can transfer up to 1775 Mb/s over the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies with compatible devices. It is designed to support up to 150 devices without putting a drag on performance, allowing you to stream videos, play games, and more without interruption.

Can I have two different mesh systems? ›

As long as the manufacturer supports inter-model and inter-generation compatibility, if you follow these guidelines you'll have a really smooth experience adding more mesh nodes to your home network.

Can you choose which Deco to connect to? ›

Turn off Auto, select the preferred source Deco, and then click on Save to save the changes. And on the Network Map page, you will see the target Deco connects to the source Deco you want to connect.

Can I connect Deco to Deco? ›

Satellite Deco will join the Deco network automatically within two minutes after you power them on if the Main Deco and the Satellite Deco are from the same package. After creating a Deco network, you can add more Decos to the network to expand the Wi-Fi coverage and manage them easily on your Deco app.

Does the Deco X20 need a router? ›

No, Regardless of what mode you use, the main Deco must stay connected to your home modem/router via an Ethernet cable to act as a main unit. Other Deco units can connect to the main Deco wirelessly.

Do all decos need to connect to the main Deco? ›

One Deco must be connected to your Internet Modem (not Router) via Ethernet. The other(s) can be anywhere in range, but work even better if they are connected via ethernet.

What is the difference between Deco X60 and 20? ›

The X20 offers Wi-Fi 6 speeds up to 1,800 Mbps—1,201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, and the X60 Wi-Fi 6 speeds up to 3,000 Mbps—2,400 Mbps on 5 GHz and 575 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. BSS Coloring detects and marks data frames from neighboring networks, avoiding unnecessary slowdowns and minimizing Wi-Fi interference.

Can you mix Deco WiFi? ›

You can mix different Deco units in your network - just go through this FAQ for details to consider.
