Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Academic Coordinator position will provide academic support andservices to student-athletes on an assigned caseload. This positionwill advise student-athletes and monitor academic progress and NCAAathletic eligibility of assigned student-athletes. This workinvolves effective communication, collaboration, and coordinationwith internal and external stakeholders. It is imperative thisposition identifies and understands student-athlete’s academicneeds and can build and maintain effective relationships withstudent-athletes, coaches, staff, and faculty while adhering to allinstitutional, CAA, and NCAA rules and regulations.

Academic Coordinator:

  • Serve as the primary contact and athletic Academic Coordinatorfor assigned sports programs. Responsible for overseeing theimplementation of academic plans while monitoring the academicprogress of student-athletes in assigned sports programs.
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor for undeclaredstudent-athletes under the direction of University College throughmajor declaration; serve as a secondary academic advisor forassigned student-athletes upon major declaration and throughgraduation.
  • Calculate NCAA continuing eligibility numbers for an assignedcaseload of student-athletes, including evaluations of prospectivetransfer student-athletes.
  • In collaboration with the coaching staff, conduct weekly focusmeetings with designated student-athletes from the caseload ofsports teams.
  • Communicate regularly with coaches, faculty, and administrationon student-athletes academic progress.
  • Provide detailed reports to appropriate personnel on individualstudent-athlete needs and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Conduct new student orientation by presenting material toincoming student-athletes and non-athletes regarding courseselections and general University advisem*nt.
  • Conduct academic information sessions for prospectivestudent-athletes during official and unofficial visits to campusfor assigned sports programs.
  • Act as a resource for regular accessibility for AthleticDepartment stakeholders.
  • Assist in the general oversight of study hall and tutorialservices.
  • Provide a student-centered approach to learning.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping and protect confidentialmaterials.
  • Assist with SASS tutoring operations, study hall monitorsupervision, and special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additionally, this position will occasionally be required to worknights and weekends.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, SportsAdministration, or related field.
  • Experience in education or a field of study that enhances theindividual’s ability to assist at-risk student-athletes in anacademic environment.
  • Knowledge of NCAA continuing eligibility, CAA, and universityrules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective learning strategies, assessment tools,motivational techniques, and student skill development.
  • Familiarity with FERPA guidelines.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Master’s degree with 1-3 years of experience in athleticacademic advising.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and process confidentialinformation with the utmost discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to build trust and strong professional interpersonalrelationships with student-athletes, coaches, and universitypersonnel.
  • Have a student-centered approach to learning.

Student-Athlete Support Services, reporting through AcademicAffairs and Athletics, contributes to the University of NorthCarolina Wilmington’s commitment to excellence in undergraduateeducation by providing student-athlete development, academicadvising, and support for students as they enter the University andtransition to their chosen major. Student-Athlete Support Servicesprovides ongoing assistance and support to student-athletesthroughout their UNCW careers. By using developmental andeducational approaches.

Academic Affairs and Student-Athlete Support Services provideacademic advising, curricular programs, and co-curricular events tohelp students make a smooth transition to UNCW and achieve theirdesired goals. As part of both Academic Affairs and Athletics,Student-Athlete Support Services serves student-athletes in theirholistic development, transition to UNCW, and guidance in achievingacademic goals.
